Press release: Birthplace Lightshow Xmas 2013

Christmas 3D lightshow spectacular at Shakespeare’s Birthplace, Stratford-upon-Avon
The first 3D lightshow to combine a laser lightshow with live theatrical performances will be staged outside Shakespeare’s Birthplace, Stratford-upon-Avon this Christmas. Laser show company CMT Events has been commissioned to beam a spectacular display onto the walls of Shakespeare’s Birthplace, while resident acting troupe Shakespeare Aloud! performs some of the most dramatic scenes from Shakespeare’s best loved plays. Starting on 21 November, the 3D lightshow will be performed four times nightly until 19 December. The free four week show is the result of a partnership between the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust and local independent businesses to create a major new event in the town’s festive programme with support from Warwickshire County Council’s Operation Footfall – which aims to get more people into the county’s town centres.
Revellers can also enjoy taking a tour of Shakespeare’s Birthplace by night where visitors will be given special candle lights to walk around the house with. The Birthplace will be extending its opening hours and will also be offering mince pies and mulled wine in the café.
The Shakespeare’s Birthplace Lightshow will have its premiere at 5.45pm on 21 November. There will be a chance to meet the Guide Dogs for the Blind Shakespeare’s Puppies, enjoy live music and entertainment from Touch FM who will be hosting the event, and Christmas carols from local school children. Paralympic rower James Roe and Stratford Town Mayor Diane Walden will flip the switch to start the first light spectacular at 5.45pm. Outside in Henley Street there will also be a new Christmas market with over 40 stalls offering a whole host of Christmas gift ideas.
Philippa Rawlinson, Head of Operations and Business Development at the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust, said, “Stratford-upon-Avon is a renowned Christmas destination with a mix of independent shops providing a great choice of special gifts, cafés and restaurants catering for every taste, and of course it is home to the world’s most important Shakespeare heritage sites.
“We have been working in partnership with businesses in the area to create a really special experience where visitors can spend not only the day, but also enjoy an atmospheric Christmas evening in one of the country’s best preserved market towns.”
John Mackinnon, from the Henley Street Traders, said, “It’s going to be a truly magical Christmas on Henley Street this year. A 3D lightshow, extra market stalls on the launch night, street entertainment and lots of individual independent shops and eateries – all ideal for finding unique and interesting Christmas presents.”
